Demon Slayer: How Did Akaza Become a Demon?
Akaza is the Upper rank 3 Demon of Muzan Kibutsuji‘s 12 moon demon army. He was previously known as Hakuji before transforming into a demon.
The reason why Akaza finally became a demon really mattered to what he suffered. He pursued to protect the ones he loved and cared about, his sick father, his fiancée Koyuki and his teacher Keizo.
When he lost all the love of his life, he no longer had a reason to live. He accepted Muzen’s offer and turned into a demon, losing his memory in the process, but maintaining his will to become stronger. Hakuji goes on to become the Upper Moon 3 Akaza.
The Story of Akaza
Akaza is probably a demon with the most tragic past. A over century ago, Akaza was a human by the name of Hakuji. He is a poor kid who needed to get stronger so he could steal money from the people around town to get medicines for his sick father.
Even before he became a demon, he was considered a demon child. At only 11 years old, he’d already committed many crimes and had pickpocket tattoo lines put on his arm so that everyone would know he was a criminal.
And no matter how many times Hakuji was hit tattooed threatened and so on, he was determined to keep stealing so he could help out his dad until his dad did not want to trouble his son anymore and took his own life. In the letter his dad left, he stated he wanted Hakuji to live a full life and didn’t want to take medicine if it was earned by dishonest means.
Hakuji started taking out his frustration on the world and the people in it. He fought with and beat seven adults with his bare fists and nearly killed them, but then he ran into his future sensei(teacher) Keizo, the owner of a local dojo. Annoyed by the man’s cheerful demeanor, Hakuji challenged him to a fight, but was defeated with ease.
Keizo taught Hakuji a bare fist fighting style called soryu and he helped train Hakuji in it as well. Keizo then took him in so he could nurse Koyuki, Keizo’s sickly daughter. Her mother, her previous caretaker, drowned herself due to stress.
After this, two years had passed, and Koyuki’s health had improved significantly. The love blossomed between Hakuji and Koyuki.
One day, Keizo offered Hakuji the proposal he said to Hakuji to take over his Dojo and marry Koyuki. He agreed, silently vowing to protect both of them, even at the cost of his own life.
When he was 18 years old, he went to his dad’s grave to tell him of his upcoming marriage only to come back to find out that their well had been poisoned by a rival dojo. The rival dojo resorted to such cowardly means because they could never beat Keizo and Hakuji in martial arts.
Not surprisingly after losing his sensei and the love of his life, he snapped. The incident was recorded in history. Hakuji confronted the Kenjutsu dojo and killed 67 people with his bare fists, pulverizing them to the point where their corpses were no longer recognizable.
People thought the story was so absurd and preposterous. An 18 years old kid beating up 67 swordsmen with his bare hands. But it was true that Hakuji managed that before he even became a demon and get the power upgrade associated with that.
This incident caught Muzan Kibutsuji’s attention and, though he was disappointed to find it had been a human rather than a Demon who’d done such a gruesome act, he decided to make Hakuji one of the Twelve Kizuki.
It was at this point when he lost all the love of his life, Hakuji no longer had a reason to live. Muzen approached him, he gave hakuji a bunch of demon blood to see if he could survive it and became one of demon moons. Hakuji didn’t care about anything anymore and let himself be turned into a demon, losing his memory in the process, but maintaining his will to become stronger. Hakuji goes on to become the Upper Moon 3 Akaza.
Why Does Akaza Want Rengoku Kyojuro to Become a Demon
Akaza desires to become stronger. To make himself strong, he prefers to battle with the powerful guy.
Akaza is Upper Moon 3 in demons, only Muzan, Kokushibo, and Doma are stronger that him. But they three are impossible to sparring with him.
During his time as a Demon, Akaza noted that he had met and battled several Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps during his hundreds of years of life. During these meeting, Akaza had invited every single one of them to become a Demon due to Akaza liking the natural strength, genius and skill the Hashira had possessed, wishing to continue battling against them forever.
When fighting against Rengoku Kyojuro, he compliments Rengoku he’s close to the realmof the highest but he can’t quite get there because he’ll just grow old and die before it can happen.
He thought Rengoku was capable of becoming more powerful in the future as a demon and keep training for hundreds of years to become even stronger than he is right now. He wish him become stronger so they can continue battling against forever. That is the reason why he invite Rengoku to be a demon.
How Many Hashira Did Akaza Kill
When battling with Rengoku, Akaza said he had met and killed several Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps during his hundreds of years of life.
During these meeting, Akaza had invited every single one of them to become a Demon due to Akaza liking the natural strength, genius and skill the Hashira had possessed, wishing to continue battling against them forever. Bute none of Hashira accepts his invite to be a demon.
Although not exactly specified, it has been stated by Akaza that each of the Hashira that he battled did not use the Flame Breathing, showing that his battle with Kyojuro Rengoku was the first time he had come across a Flame Hashira.
The comic doesn’t tell a specific number that how many Hashira did Akaza kill.
Why Did Akaza Go to the Train
The reason why Akaza was there in the first place was quite possibly because Kibutsuji Muzan had sent him to kill Tanjiro as well as the Hashira.
Within the Demon Slayer anime, it has already been established that Muzan feared Tanjiro since he possessed the same Hanafuda earrings as legendary Demon Slayer Yoriichi Tsukiguni. And because of Muzan’s potent telepathic powers, it is quite possible that he realized that Enmu had failed in his mission of killing Tanjiro. Following this, he would have sent Akaza to finish the job.
In the first episode of Kimetsu no Yaiba: Tsuzumi Yashiki Hen, we will see that Akaza goes back to report to Muzen after the Mugen Train mission, saying that he killed a Hashira. But Muzan said angrily, “You boast of having killed a Hashira, but there were three other Demon Slayers there. Why did you fail to kill them off, after I made a point of sending you there because you happened to be nearby?”
Why Does Akaza Not Eat Woman
As noted by Upper Moon 2 Doma, he refused to ever eat or harm women.
Even after becoming a demon and losing his memories of his human life, parts of his human memories influenced his decisions; he refuses to eat or kill women, despite knowing it would make him stronger if he did so.
Akaza was Upper Moon 2 but was defeated by Doma in a blood battle and pushed to Upper Moon 3. Doma’s Blood Demon Art of Cryokinesis smashes Akaza. Doma is a beast in long and short-range combat, while Akaza only has close-range moves. Doma says that one of the reasons he is more powerful than Akaza is that he eats more women.
